When using any camera for any project here are a few essentials to bare in mind to get the best results:
Check Memory Cards and Batteries before you start recording
Give yourself handles i.e. Start the the camera rolling before you call action
Keep the camera rolling after the indented shot/action has finished
Film slightly more than you think you need
Film multiple takes
Don't be afraid to run the same scene from different angles, until you find the one that works best
Keep the camera rolling after the indented shot/action has finished
Zoom in to check focus
Scout out locations before you start filming
Position your subject in the best available light (e.g. not against a light source like a window as you will get a silhouette of your subject, unless it's intended)
Use white paper or card as bounce
Use mobile phone lights
Position household lamps to add more light or add to the mise en scene
The time of day will massively change the lighting conditions.
Where is or will the sun be at the time of shooting?
Turn off/shut out unwanted noise e.g. air con, fans, fridges, open windows, loud clocks or anything you don't want in your video
You can also add sounds in post but taking away sound is 100x harder
Get the mic as close as possible
When using on board mic Close Up shots for dialogue scenes will help get clearer audio.
Use your phone as a wireless mic
When you have no slate clap your hands and say the scene/shot number.
Where possible always wear headphones to hear what you are recording
